Over the years, one feature that has become increasingly prominent on Kampala’s social scene is brunch. What started as a leisurely weekend meal has evolved into a social experience, bringing together music, food, fashion and the opportunity to catch up with friends outside the usual nightlife setting.
The phenomenon has gradually spread beyond the capital, finding audiences in towns such as Jinja and Mbarara. This Sunday, November 8, Gulu gets its moment as Chill & Bite Meatings celebrates its first anniversary with an all-white affair at Revelation Cottages.
The anniversary edition, in partnership with Johnnie Walker, will take the form of a Bottle Turnup, with an RnB Soul and Sing Along theme that leans into nostalgia, friendship and familiar sounds.
Unlike the conventional night out, the daytime format gives people an opportunity to ease into their Sunday, reconnect with friends and enjoy music that brings back memories. RnB and Soul provide the soundtrack, with familiar songs inviting guests to sing along and perhaps revisit some of the music that has accompanied different chapters of their lives.
The musical experience will be hosted by MC Kash Owakabi, with DJs Big Val, Joelfresh, Amo B and Drey taking turns on the decks. Their selection is expected to keep the afternoon rooted in the sounds of RnB and Soul, while giving guests plenty of reasons to stay on the dance floor.
The all-white dress code adds a visual identity to the celebration, encouraging guests to turn up in their best white outfits.
For Johnnie Walker, the partnership is an opportunity to connect with audiences beyond Kampala through experiences that bring people together around music, culture and social occasions. It also reflects the brand’s Keep Walking philosophy, which places emphasis on recognising progress, celebrating milestones and looking ahead to what comes next.
“Brunch culture is increasingly becoming an important part of how people socialise and create shared experiences across Uganda. For us at Johnnie Walker, it is exciting to see these experiences growing beyond Kampala and finding their place in towns such as Gulu. Chill & Bite Meatings reaching its first anniversary is a milestone worth celebrating, and we are proud to be part of it. Through our Keep Walking philosophy, we believe in recognising progress, appreciating the journey and celebrating the people who make it possible. We look forward to giving the people of Gulu an afternoon of great music, connection and memorable moments,” said the Johnnie Walker Brand Manager.
Beyond the weekend’s celebrations, the Brand Manager also highlighted Johnnie Walker’s place in the upcoming festive season, encouraging consumers to consider the whisky as a gifting option for people they appreciate. Through Uganda Breweries Limited’s festive catalogue, consumers can explore Johnnie Walker gifting options at attractive prices, with additional touches such as personalised bottle engraving and special gift packaging available to make the gesture more thoughtful. The offering provides an opportunity to turn a bottle into a more personal gift, whether for family, friends, colleagues or other important relationships during the festive season.
Chill & Bite Meatings reaching its first anniversary provides just such an occasion. Beyond marking a year of the platform, the celebration recognises the community that has supported it and the social connections built along the way.
As brunch culture continues to find its footing across Uganda, experiences such as this demonstrate how towns beyond Kampala are developing their own social calendars and creating spaces for people to gather.
The celebrations take place on Sunday, November 8, at Revelation Cottages in Gulu, with gates opening at midday. Reservations can be made on 0768202585 or 0777338335.
