Staff at Speke Resort Munyonyo have donated blood as part of the resort’s ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, supporting efforts to maintain adequate blood supplies for patients across Uganda.

The blood donation exercise was held last week in partnership with Nakasero Blood Bank, with employees turning up to give blood and support patients who depend on transfusions during medical treatment.

Blood is needed for a wide range of medical procedures, including surgeries, treatment of accident victims, cancer care and the management of some chronic conditions.

The resort management thanked the employees who took part in the exercise, saying their contribution would help save lives.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our staff who participated and helped make this initiative a success,” the management said.

Uganda continues to face challenges in meeting the demand for blood. The country, which has a population of more than 48 million people, collects about 300,000 units of blood annually, according to Makerere University News. This is below the World Health Organization’s recommended target of one donation for every 100 people each year.

The Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS) estimates that the country needs about 510,030 units of blood annually.

Speke Resort Munyonyo said the donation drive reflects its commitment to supporting community well-being and contributing to the healthcare sector.

The resort also encouraged more people to donate blood, noting that regular donations can help hospitals maintain supplies and ensure patients receive blood when they need it.
