At least 35 people died in road crashes that occurred during the ushering in of the New Year from December 30th, 2022, to January 1st, 2023, according to the traffic report released on Monday.

The report shows that a total of 104 road crashes occurred in that period, of which 28 were fatal, 49 were serious, and 29 were minor. Of the 149 victims, 114 sustained serious injuries.

Faridah Nampiima, the traffic police spokeswoman, attributed the accidents to reckless driving.

Nampiima said that a total of 3175 traffic offenders were arrested and issued Express Penalty Scheme (EPS) tickets in the whole country, among which 545 were due to reckless driving, 717 were due to dangerous mechanical conditions, 311 were due to invalid driving licenses, and 259 were due to using vehicles without third party insurance on the road, among others.

The traffic police mouthpiece warned all road users to remain vigilant while using the road and urged drivers to avoid reckless driving since it has been seen as the leading cause of fatalities on the roads.
