Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president Erias Lukwago is expected to appear before the Kampala court on Wednesday to answer to treason-related charges that were alledgedly approved by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
His court appearance follows a tense two-day sequence of events that led to his arrest and detention by military operatives.
On June 15, armed personnel reportedly picked Lukwago from his home in Wakaliga, Kampala, before taking him to an undisclosed location. He was later said to have been moved to Kira Division Police, where he is currently being held. At the time of reporting, his family, lawyers and close associates had not been granted access to him.
The arrest happened while Lukwago was preparing to serve court summons on Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The summons were linked to a case involving alleged threats against opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye.
Gen Kainerugaba later confirmed on social media that he had ordered the operation and shared posts and images relating to Lukwago on his X account. He also issued warnings suggesting that anyone attempting to serve him court documents would face consequences.
On Tuesday, the Chief of Defence Forces announced that Lukwago would be handed over to police custody. However, he later posted that although he had considered releasing him after being persuaded by his wife, Charlotte Kainerugaba, Lukwago would remain in detention for another night before being formally transferred.
Lukwago, a senior lawyer, is part of the legal team representing Dr Kizza Besigye, who is also facing treason charges before the courts.
