The New York Red Bulls have officially promoted Ibrahim Sekagya to a full-time role as Assistant Coach for the First Team, the club announced on Tuesday.

“We’re excited to welcome Ibra [Sekagya] to our first team coaching staff on a full-time basis,” said Jochen Schneider, Head of Sport. “He’s played a key role in developing some exceptional talent at Red Bulls II and has guided the team to a strong start this season in MLS NEXT Pro. His dedication and leadership have earned him this opportunity, and we’re proud to see him continue with the organization.”

Sekagya will immediately begin his new responsibilities. His final match as Head Coach of New York Red Bulls II will be on Saturday, June 15, when the team faces Chattanooga FC at MSU Soccer Park. The club will announce his successor at a later date.

Since being named head coach of Red Bulls II on February 6, 2023, Sekagya has made a significant impact. In his first full season, he led the squad to the Eastern Conference semifinals with a 14-8-6 record, securing a fourth-place finish. Previously, he served as an assistant coach with the team since its inaugural season in 2015.

This year, Sekagya has guided Red Bulls II to their best start in franchise history. Through 12 matches, the team boasts an 8-2-2 record and sits atop the Eastern Conference with 27 points and a league-leading 27 goals. Under his leadership, emerging talents like Omar Valencia—who currently leads the First Team in assists—and Mohammed Sofo—who has scored seven goals in all competitions—have flourished.

A respected figure in the club’s history, Sekagya is no stranger to Red Bulls fans. He played for the First Team from 2013 to 2014, making 41 appearances and helping the squad capture the 2013 Supporters’ Shield. Before that, he spent six successful years with Red Bull Salzburg, tallying 225 appearances.

Sekagya’s legacy continues to grow—this time, from the sidelines of the First Team.
