Since Saturday 18 May, a multi-agency team has been searching properties linked to former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among as part of a corruption investigation.
The operation, which sources say was sanctioned by President Yoweri Museveni, is looking into allegations of corruption, money laundering and illicit enrichment involving Parliament and several government offices.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate and forensic services, supported by Defence Intelligence and Security operatives, have carried out the searches at her residences and offices in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda and Bukedea.
So far the team has impounded six vehicles from two of her homes. On Monday they recovered a Rolls-Royce and a Range Rover from her residence in Kigo.
On Wednesday, they took two Toyota Land Cruisers, a Mercedes-Benz and a Lexus from her home in Nakasero. All six vehicles have been moved to Police Headquarters in Naguru.
Alongside the vehicles, investigators say they have recovered cash, jewellery, company documents, bank cheques, land titles and surveillance footage.
On Tuesday the operation was extended to Parliament itself, where the Speaker’s office, the Clerk to Parliament’s office and the Parliament Finance Department were sealed off while officers searched for accountability records, electronic evidence, safes and other materials.
The phones and other electronic devices that were confiscated are expected to be central to the next stage of the probe. Investigators believe they will help trace communications, financial transactions and any deleted digital records connected to the case.
The wider investigation is also examining alleged procurement deals, financial networks and coordination among politically connected individuals within Parliament and government ministries.
